Let’s face it: moving is a drag. It’s not exactly something you hop out of bed excited to do. And some days, you just don’t have the time or energy to get all the moving tasks done that you were hoping to. That’s why it’s important to be educated in how to optimize the packing and moving processes for an efficient, stress-free move. You might want to start with these tips: Start with a checklist. This is where you plan everything leading up to the move. If you are one of the many people who dread packing, break up your packing by small tasks of packing by categories, from least used to most used items, so you’re motivated to get it done during the weeks leading up to moving day. Putting your checklist in calendar format might motivate you to get each task done day-by-day. Placing it in a place that you always look at first thing in the morning is also a great motivator and reminder. People tend to like hard copies that you can check off as they go along. Find out what format works best for you. Be sure not only to plan out what you’re packing, but also what utilities you’ll need to plan for during and after the move, such as electricity, heat, water, etc. Donation pick-ups and other such events should also be noted. Plan these ahead of time, and your future self will thank you. Account for bumps along the way. You should be realistic in your plans leading up to the move. Account for days when you don’t have time to pack your fine china or when you have trouble scheduling a moving truck. These things always happen because we are imperfect people living in an imperfect world. So if you have some time before moving day, make your goals and tasks realistic, even baby steps. This will put less strain on an already stressful process. Equip yourself with proper tools. You’ll need a lot of tools to make this move quick and easy: boxes, box cutters, packing tape, garbage bags, foam pouches, packing peanuts, paper towels, gloves, Sharpies, Post-Its, door stoppers, whatever you need to keep organized and efficient. Think about the type of moving truck you need. Does it have a ramp? Can the moving service provide you with a furniture dolly and straps to get your stuff up this ramp? Do not be afraid to ask what they have available. Understand how to pack. Make sure you know how to pack fragile vs. sturdy items, heavy vs. light, and so on. Avoid packing heavy items in large boxes, as this makes it harder for you and the movers. Be sure you know how to pack your fragile, expensive items so they won’t break. Also, make sure your organization skills don’t end here. Label each box with its contents and what room it’s from. Avoid haphazardly throwing items from different rooms into the same box. This will certainly confuse you and slow down the unpacking process later. Plan, plan, plan. Plot out in your head how every step will go down. Will the movers have a place to park? Make sure they will. What happens if a valuable item breaks? Take photos beforehand as proof of their condition before the move. When are moving companies in highest demand?
