6 Ways to Change Your Mindset
6 Ways to Change Your Mindset

Are things getting you down? Are you losing motivation? Are you finding yourself unable to let go of the things you get caught up in every day? Maybe you need a shift in mindset. Here are some tips on giving your mindset a check: 1) Drop what you’re doing. Do anything else. If you’re at home, go for a walk. If you’re alone, call a friend. If you’re stressed from work, drop your work for a little while and read, draw, focus on anything else. Our attitudes come from our habits, so if we want the attitude to change, we need to change the action. 2) Check in on your well-being. If you read our article on Self-Care, you know that our well-being isn’t just physical but also emotional, financial, social, and spiritual. Are all these parts of you being nurtured? If not, what happened, and what needs to change to fix it? 3) Make an honest list of your values. A lot of the pain in our lives stems not from the circumstances but rather the story we tell ourselves about these circumstances. These stories stem from values that we and others have placed on us. If you’re stressed, ask yourself:

  • Whose rule am I buying into? What rule is it?
  • Is this something in my control, or is it based on external events outside of my control?
  • Does this rule endorse a growth mindset that values effort and growth, or a perfectionist mindset that does not accept failure?
4) Reflect on last year’s goals. Look in an old journal or at least try to remember what your long-term goals were last year. Are they the same goals you have now? Have you accomplished some of last year’s goals? What caused these changes? How do you want to apply them to next year’s goals? 5) Think about the problems you are willing to have. No one’s life is perfect, and every life decision you make involves giving something up in favor of something else. What are you willing to give up? What problems are you willing to face? Are you facing these problems now? 6) Memento mori. Remember your death. We get caught up in so many trivial things that just don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Whether we like it or not, we are going to die someday. What would we regret not doing when this happens? Are we doing it now? If not, what needs to change? Bottom Line: A lot of our suffering and joy comes from our mindset. Hopefully these steps can help you gain a little perspective!
